Marathon Training & Racing from

My first (and only) AR event to date is/was SOAR08...and it really didn't turn out as good as I had hoped.  I was in
good shape but had not spent enough time on the bike.  Combine that with a broken chain below Glenn Falls (a 5
mile bike push back to the transition) and it was a bit of a death march.  The result was still good (3rd place and no
one passed me even after the chain break), but I knew I could do better.

Fast forward to 09.  I wanted a Spring sub3 marathon and then a better effort at SOAR.  I wasn't fat in February, but if
I lost about 10 lbs, I'd be better for both.  At the same time I was having some right hip issues, so I hopped on the
spin bike (coupled with some yoga) to see what would happen.  I also kept up deep tissue massage and found a
super great sports Chiropractor (
Josh Glass).  All combined and four months later, I was 13 or 14 lbs down with
good hips, pliable muscles and much better riding legs.  The running legs too were good...2:57:12 in Delaware on
5/17 (4th overall, 1st master).

Highlands remains our weekend getaway, which means lots of trail / forest road riding and running.  It also means
I can't help but learn the terrain; a slight advantage because SOAR will probably never have great maps.  The maps
are OK, but course markings are needed to eliminate allot of racer frustration.  The organizers see the race as a
great fitness tune-up / test (Main Street is the only flat street in Highlands) and not so much a mapping exercise.  I'll
probably do a more orienteering race one day, but for now SOAR is exactly what I'm looking for...a speed, strength
and endurance event.

Check the right margin; it's a rough, light-hearted recap of the race.  I really couldn't have felt better all day.  My
transitions were terrible, but the legs were movin'.  And below are some pics from the race.  They're mostly of
me,Michael (last year's co-winner) and his race partner Steven.  We spent most of the middle part of the race
together.  Michael and Steven came over Friday night with their maps and we UTMed, talked some strategy and
maybe had a couple of brews (at least for me and Michael).  It always helps having friends to 'run' a course with,
doesn't it.

7:03
Started on foot at 5th and Main towards Horse Cove
7:04
In no less than 20th place after what resembled a 5k
start (except with backpacks and helmets)
7:06
Caught up with Michael and Steven (M&S)
7:15
On Bowery with an unintentional gap on M&S and a
decision to make
7:16
Looked back, no M&S so I turned on the legs and went
for the lead
7:23
CP1 with no one (literally) in sight...ask Greg Keller
Not yet 8:00
CP2 after a crazy but fun woods run
8:00
Start leaving transition area w/out bike helmet on.
Thought I had at least a 10 min lead, but a group
came in before I got out of transition.
8:20
CP3 and the rappel sight
8:25
Still screwing with my gear and M&S just showed up.
Good grief, both of my backpack zippers are jammed
8:35
Up and down the 70 foot rappel and still in first place,
but more transition issues...where did my helmet
buckle go...oh come on
8:38
Out of CP3 with helmet tied on but with 4 people now
in front of me.............horrible
8:55
At CP4 and decided to use a tarp strap to keep my
helmet on...and it worked.  Wasted more time though
and figured I was now 10 minutes behind
9:10
Wait a minute, is that the 3rd and 4th guys doing a
backtrack...yeah baby, now it's just me and M&S...but
they're way gone as far as I know
9:15
See Taylor (he met M&S the night before), joke that
those guys are burying me and he says they're only a
couple of minutes ahead
9:18
Oh my goodness, there they are starting the bike
hike...awesome
9:30
CP5 after a super fun technically trail bomb
9:50
CP6 and a bit of refueling
10:15
CP7 and a quick conversation about skipping CP8
and catching it on the way back
10:25
Back out to main road and a gap on M&S so I decided
to bomb to CP8 since I was going to have to paddle
the lake alone
10:35
Done with CP8 and hoping to see M&S before they
leave CP9
10:50
At CP9 bike drop and M&S are still there...cool
11:05
On the way to CP10 with M&S; see 4 foot black snake;
decide not to pick this bad boy up.
11:20
At CP10 bike drop after alittle doubt about the CP10
location.  Feeling great and go ahead for the punch.
11:40
At CP11 with the Glenn Falls mandatory bike push
ahead of me
12:20
Through Glenn Falls and at CP12 (the lake).  Have to
get my canoe off the carry rack and launched with no
assistance...not a huge deal (but unnecessary, really)
12:25
On the lake with a pretty solid side / head wind
12:26
Opps just got blown into a parked pontoon boat...good
lord
12:40
Have the first lake CP and then...well another boat
collision...in the 64 tunnel with a competitor (but really
not my fault)
1:10
Back at the boat takeout and am told I have to solo
reload my canoe back on the rack (80 lbs).  There are
only 3 people ahead of me (from the sprint race)
which means there's 100ish people coming.  Re-rack,
really?  But I re-racked that greased pig with a smile.
1:16
On the bike with 14 minute to meet my 6:30 pre-race
goal
1:32
Finished feeling great and hoping they use the fact
that we started 3 minutes late

6:28:51 Official Time...Awesome!!!
